Treatments in 3D

What happens in the tooth during a treatment, step by step on a lower molar. The model is schematic and not a picture of a treatment result.

An implant, step by step

Shown schematically on a lower molar. Here the implant heals under the gum before the abutment follows.

Caries and filling

Caries in the biting surface of a molar, schematic, in section.

Root canal treatment

When the pulp is inflamed, shown schematically on a lower molar.

Periodontitis

How the inflammation attacks the tooth's support, schematic.

Removing a wisdom tooth

An impacted lower wisdom tooth, schematic, in section. It is removed when it causes problems or is likely to; removing wisdom teeth that cause no problems as a precaution has no proven benefit.

A molar in section

A lower molar in the jaw, cut open. Point at a layer to highlight it in the model.

Schematic, based on textbook measurements. Drag to turn, zoom with Ctrl (Mac: ⌘) and the mouse wheel; point at a structure to see its name.

The implant as a video

The same eight steps as a short film, without sound; the captions in the film are in German.

  1. Diagnosis: The tooth has cracked into the root and cannot be saved.
  2. Removing the tooth: Under local anaesthesia the tooth is removed. The empty socket remains in the bone.
  3. Healing: Bone and gum fill the socket. Depending on the findings, the implant is placed straight away, after a few weeks or after a few months.
  4. Implant bed: The gum is opened and a small hole for the implant is drilled into the jawbone.
  5. Implant: The implant, an artificial tooth root, is screwed into the bone.
  6. Healing in: The gum is stitched over it. For three to six months the implant grows firmly into the bone.
  7. Abutment: In a second small procedure the implant is uncovered and the abutment is attached.
  8. Crown: The crown is fixed onto the abutment.
