Winning search when nobody clicks.
The click was the currency of the open web. The hardest behavioural data we have says it is being withdrawn from circulation — and brand strategy built on traffic needs a different foundation.
Pew Research tracked the real search behaviour of 900 American adults across nearly 69,000 queries in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared on the results page, users clicked any link just 8% of the time, against 15% without a summary. They clicked a source cited inside the summary 1% of the time. And with a summary present they more often ended the session entirely — the answer was consumed on the results page. The Wikimedia Foundation showed the receiving end in October 2025: human pageviews of Wikipedia down roughly 8% year on year, as engines answer directly from its data without sending the visit.
Visibility and traffic have decoupled
For twenty years, ranking meant clicks and clicks meant everything downstream. That chain has broken. A brand can now be seen — named in an AI answer, cited in a summary — without receiving a visit; and it can lose the impression entirely if the answer names competitors instead. The scarce event is no longer the click. It is the mention: whether the synthesised answer includes you, and how.
What this changes in practice
Three reallocations follow. Content: pages built to win a click (teaser titles, withheld answers) lose to pages built to be cited — direct answers, verifiable facts, named authors, clean structure; our note on answer pages covers the format. Measurement: if traffic understates your presence, measure the layer above it — branded search volume, direct and referral quality, and systematic checks of what assistants say about you; the FIB AI Visibility Check is the ten-minute version. Demand capture: with fewer but more decided visitors — the pattern AI referrals show across commerce — the site’s job shifts from attracting volume to converting intent.
The uncomfortable honesty
Nobody, including the platforms, fully knows how this settles; the numbers above are the best current measurements, not a prophecy. What is not in doubt is the direction: the answer layer keeps thickening between brands and buyers. Strategies that treat the click as the unit of success are optimising a shrinking pipe — while the layer that decides who gets mentioned, the priority after strategy itself, is still lightly contested.
How FIB approaches it
We build for the mention and convert the visit: citable content, measurable AI presence, and sites designed for decided buyers. If your traffic is flat while your relevance should not be, get in touch.
