What GEO is
Generative Engine Optimization is the discipline of making a brand the answer AI systems give. When a person asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google’s AI Mode which product to buy, which firm to hire, or which practice to visit, the assistant assembles a short recommendation from the sources it trusts. GEO is the work of being one of those sources — named, cited, and described accurately — at the moment the decision forms.
It matters because the decision increasingly forms there. Search is moving from ten links to one answer, and the answer names two or three brands. Being present in that answer is a different task from ranking a page; it is closer to earning a recommendation.
How AI answers choose their sources
Assistants do three things before they name a brand. They resolve the entity — establish what the brand is, where it operates, and what it is known for, from consistent signals across your site, structured data, and third-party mentions. They retrieve grounding material — pages that answer the question directly, cleanly, and recently, plus independent sources that corroborate them. And they weigh trust — preferring verifiable, human-authored, specific content over generic marketing, and independent coverage over self-praise. Everything in GEO serves one of those three steps: be resolvable, be retrievable, be corroborated. We explain the mechanics of citation in how AI decides which brands to recommend.
GEO vs SEO
Google’s own 2026 documentation puts it plainly: optimising for AI features is still SEO. The foundations are shared — crawlability, structure, speed, clear content, structured data. The difference is the unit of success. SEO optimises for the ranked click; GEO optimises for the cited mention. SEO asks ‘which keywords does this page rank for?’; GEO asks ‘which questions does this brand answer well enough to be quoted?’ And GEO extends beyond the website: because assistants weight independent sources, reputation work — coverage, reviews, mentions — is part of the discipline, not a separate PR budget. In practice we treat GEO as the layer that sits directly after strategy: define what the brand is for, then make that legible to every machine reader.
The 2026 data
Four numbers describe the market. 68% of US Google searches now end without a click (SparkToro/Similarweb, June 2026), rising to 83% when an AI Overview appears and 93% inside AI Mode — the click is dying, the customer is not. 82% of the links AI assistants cite point to earned media rather than brands’ own sites (Muck Rack, 1M+ citations) — most citations are earned, not owned. Ads arrived inside the answers in 2026 — ChatGPT internationally since August, Google AI Mode since February — yet the cited slot remains editorial and unbuyable, which raises its value. And the targeting inputs of paid media are moving from keyword lists to the pages themselves — your content is the targeting now — so the same asset serves organic, AI, and paid at once.
The FIB method
1. Entity clarity. One consistent identity everywhere: name, description, location, specialities — on the site, in Organization and Person schema, and on the profiles assistants read. Ambiguous names need qualifiers; every brand needs the same story told the same way.
2. Answer pages. One page per real question your buyers ask, with the answer first, evidence second, and no padding — the format assistants lift. Thin pages that exist to rank work against you.
3. Structured data. Schema that matches the visible text: Organization, Person, FAQPage, BlogPosting, breadcrumbs — the layer machines read first.
4. Openness by policy. AI crawlers explicitly allowed in robots.txt, a curated llms.txt, no walls — because as publishers close off, open, machine-readable brands gain share of voice.
5. Earned citations. Original data, honest analyses, named methodologies — published where journalists and niche publications look — so independent sources corroborate what your site claims. This is the half of GEO most brands skip.
6. Verifiable substance. Assistants concentrate citations on human-authored, checkable content — the finding behind the dead-internet data. Generic AI-written volume is invisible to them; specific, sourced, human work is not.
Measuring GEO
Three instruments. The FIB AI Visibility Check: a fixed set of buyer queries run monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI — are you named, cited, described correctly, and who is named instead? Google’s generative AI performance report in Search Console, which now shows impressions inside AI features directly. And the business signals that survive zero-click: branded search volume, direct traffic, assisted conversions, and what new customers say when asked how they found you.
Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization? The practice of making a brand resolvable, retrievable, and corroborated so that AI assistants name and cite it in their answers.
Is GEO different from SEO? It shares SEO’s technical foundations but optimises for citation in AI answers rather than ranked clicks, and it includes off-site reputation work because assistants weight independent sources.
Does llms.txt help with GEO? Google has confirmed it does not use the file; other assistants and agents may read it. It costs nothing to ship, so we ship it — and spend the real effort on content, structure, and citations.
How long does GEO take? Technical foundations in weeks; presence in answers typically builds over three to six months as content is indexed and third-party corroboration accumulates.
How do you measure GEO? A monthly fixed-query check across assistants, Google’s generative AI performance report, and business signals such as branded search and assisted conversions.
